Hearing Impairment & Technology

A hearing aid is a small electronic gadget worn around the ear; behind the ear or in the ear. The device helps a person with hearing problems to take part in communication. A hearing aid makes this possible by making some sounds louder. It increases the ability of a person with hearing impairment whether in noisy or quiet situations. It is worth noting that few people; one in every five; know that they are supposed to use hearing aids and actually hear them.

A hearing equipment consists of three parts namely; an amplifier, a microphone, and a speaker. The gadget receives sound through a microphone. The microphone changes the sound waves into signals that are electrical in nature. Subsequently, it sends the signals into an amplifier. The amplifier serves to enhance the strength of electrical signals. It then relays them to the ear of a person through the speaker.

Hearing aid devices are important in enhancing understanding of speech and hearing in people with hearing impairment. The infringement could be a result of impairment on tiny sensory cells found in the inner part of the ear. The sensory cells are referred to as hair cells. The type of hearing loss that can be aided by the hearing aid is referred to as sensorineural hearing loss.

Dealing with hearing problems is a responsibility of audiologists. They are independent experts offering hearing healthcare. Audiologists fall under the jurisdiction of the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathology of Ontario (CASLPO).  The board has the responsibility of supervising clinicians during service delivery. Audiologists are trained and certified to authenticate hearing aids. To read more on the importance of getting the right hearing aids, go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearing_aid#History.

Adults could have social problems such as isolation and depression.
